iKusasalethu updates

We super happy to be working with Kwantebeni and Thabela High schools because we feel that God has placed us there for the reason and He’s not done yet. We real enjoy what we are doing in these schools, changing liefs. We just finished an up grade of their assemble area for Thabela High school, where they hold prayer every mornings, it’s also work as a school hall when they have functions and when learners are relaxing during break-time. We also helped them to set up the school library for the learners to be able to learn how to read and also increase the culture of reading. The educators and pupil are very happy to be at school now, we just brought back that hope again. We will say the spirit is very high now and we are hoping for good results at the end of the year

Their New Landscaping

Also the school asked iKusasalethu to organise a prayer day for them. Just to pray for the school because they felt they’ve been attacked by the spirit of darkness for years. The prayer day was a success, we had number of learners who gave their lives to Jesus on that day. I will say they still show some commitment of the decision they took on that day, they attend the school Christian group every week which is lead by one of the teachers, we also have thee youth leader of hillside who sometimes attend that group in the school just to support the teacher whose leading it. We also saw the need to to organize bible for them, which we had people from church donated 10 new bibles for them, Zulu and English.

Prayer Day

We also choose potential leaders the ones that we work very close with,  we will love to take them to the leadership camp at Shongweni dam to the Spirit of Adventure again this year. Why, To strengthen their innate leadership gift, qualities and skills, so that they can have a positive influence in their families, home, school and communities when we are not there, and long after we have left the building! This creates great sustainability through developing self leadership and empowering them to take ownership for their action.

2014 Leadership Camp

We also run youth Clubs, when we teach learners to be creative and also to have fun together, making new friends during school Holidays

2014 Leadership Camp

Spirit of Adventure:

September 2014 saw the youth workers take a group of learners to the Spirit of Adventure to teach them about leadership. This was a massively exciting outdoor experience, one that they can’t stop talking about. Some of their experiences –

By Skholiwe Mkhize, Grade 9:

“The experience I had was super fabulous, it was a one in a million opportunity, and it was mind blowing. It was also very scary at first but as I started to feel more comfortable, it was fun. The scariest craziest thing I have ever had to in my life was to climb down a very huge wall, but I loved it! I got a chance to meet new people and get to know them better. Some of them even shared some interesting stories about their lives. Our team leaders taught us new methods on how to work well in team. I just wish that every day I could just go to spirit of adventure because it was so nice to bond with some learners of the other school. Wow! It was a crazy experience and I’m really grateful to all the dearest teachers who organised this wonderful day. I don’t have enough words to show how grateful I am”.

By Malinga Bhekithemba, Grade 8:

“I had a great experience when we went to Shongweni Dam. I got a chance to meet new people and get new friends. And got to do things that I never thought I will do in my life. I learnt that respect is very important in your life because you can’t go anywhere without it. I also had a chance to get to know challenges that other people are facing daily, so I know I am not alone”.

Joe’s Blog

We are excited about 2015 and we are happy that iKusasalethu is moving forward. We pleased to be adding another grade in KwaNtebeni High School, which is grade 9 and we also welcome Lindo Mthembu from Hillcrest, Embo onto the team. Lindo will assist Sipho at KwaNtebeni High school. Joe and Sipho are doing grade 9’s and Nothi and Lindo are doing grade 8’s. In addition to teaching, the team is committed to visit parents more regularly, to get to know their backgrounds. This is will be the platform for encouragement and to assess how learners and their families can be supported.

Last year we took a group of learners to the Spirit of Adventure to teach them more about leadership. And this year we are planning to facilitate two one-day holiday clubs mid-year. The first will be for all the grade 8s, and the second for all the grade 9s. These will be held in the community hall in Botha’s Hill. Our plans also include afternoon motivational workshops for relevant teachers from both high schools. It is hoped that two such workshops will be facilitated each year. The aim of such workshops will be to encourage and support teachers.

Thanks to the team and iKusasalethu donors. We know we can’t change everyone, but we are doing everything we can to positively influence and change one learner at a time. The learners really enjoy the existence of our NGO because it helps them in a lot of different aspect of their lives.

Thanks from Joe and the team
